    About the data

    Where prices come from

    Live fuel prices come from the UK Government's Fuel Finder service. Forecourts report their own prices to it, and it publishes them within about 30 minutes of a change. Each price shows the time the forecourt last reported it.

    How current are the prices?

    France

    French prices come from the French government's official open data, Prix des carburants (Ministère de l'Économie, Licence Ouverte), updated about every 10 minutes. By law every French station reports its prices there. The public data doesn't include station names or brands, so French stations are shown by their address. French town and postcode search uses the national address database (Base Adresse Nationale, IGN Géoplateforme). On journeys that cross the Channel we compare euro and pound prices using the European Central Bank's daily rate; your card may use a different rate. Prices in France are shown in euros per litre, as on French pumps.

    Cheapest vs best value

    Cheapest is the lowest pump price. Best value after travel adds the cost of driving there and back, using your litres and cost-per-mile settings. It compares against your nearest station. Distances are real driving distances where we can get them (shown as “drive · minutes”); otherwise they're straight-line, which is shorter than the real drive. Treat these savings as estimates.

    Reporting a problem

    Reports go into a review queue. They never change the official price shown. You can also report a price discrepancy directly to Fuel Finder.

    EV charging

    Charging point locations, connectors and speeds come from Open Charge Map, a free database built by the community and imported from operators. It isn't complete. Prices are shown as the source lists them and may be out of date, so check the charger or the operator's app before you plug in. “Reported not working” comes from the source, not live status. Each charging point shows who supplied its data and under which licence.

    Live charging prices and free bays come from the networks' own open data, which UK networks must publish under the Public Charge Point Regulations 2023. We read MFG EV Power, Clenergy EV and char.gy now; we'll add more networks as they give access. Prices include VAT and are the network's standard price; paying through another app or card can cost more.

    Journeys

    “On a journey” finds fuel or chargers close to your driving route, so you don't have to go out of your way. Routes come from openrouteservice (HeiGIT) using OpenStreetMap data. “Off route” distances are straight-line estimates, so the real detour may be a little longer.

    Speed cameras

    Tap 📷 on the map to show or hide fixed speed cameras (📷 30 = 30 mph) and average-speed cameras (AVG). Orange dashed lines are average-speed zones. Locations come from OpenStreetMap volunteers, so some cameras may be missing or out of date, and mobile camera vans aren't shown. This is to help you drive safely: always keep to the speed limit.

    Traffic warnings

    Tap 🚧 on the map to show live closures, incidents (red, ⚠), roadworks (amber) and speed restrictions (purple, with the limit in a red circle) from National Highways. Faded dashed lines are planned in the next 12 hours. This covers England's motorways and major A-roads only, not local roads, Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland. For live crowd reports, start your journey in Waze.

    Wait or fill now?

    Every hour we record the middle (median) price for each fuel in each postcode area, and keep the last reading of each day. After about a week we can show whether prices near you are falling, rising or steady. It's a summary of what has happened, not a forecast, so prices can turn at any time.

    Clean Air Zones, ULEZ and the Congestion Charge

    On journeys we show the charging zones your route passes through: London's ULEZ and Congestion Charge, the Birmingham and Bristol Clean Air Zones, Oxford's Zero Emission Zone, and the Low Emission Zones in Glasgow, Edinburgh, Aberdeen and Dundee. Boundaries come from OpenStreetMap. Charges were checked against the official council and TfL websites on the date shown, but they can change. Whether your car pays is our best guess from its fuel and age (petrol cars usually meet the standard from 2006, diesels from September 2015), so always use the official checker linked beside each zone. Bath, Bradford, Portsmouth, Sheffield and Tyneside have Clean Air Zones too, but they don't charge private cars.

    My car

    Number plate lookups use the DVSA MOT history service (make, model, MOT due date and past test results). Road tax and insurance status aren't available to apps like this one, so enter those dates yourself and use the official GOV.UK and askMID checks. Reminders are sent 4 weeks, 1 week and 1 day before each date, and on the day.

    Counting users

    To know how many people use FillZap, each phone sends one anonymous “opened today” signal a day. It holds no name, account, ID or location, only whether it's an iPhone, Android or computer and whether the app is on the home screen. We keep totals only.

    Your account

    Signing in is optional. We keep your email address and what you've saved (car, loyalty cards, favourites and settings) so they're on any phone you sign in on. We don't share it or send marketing. You can delete your account any time in Settings.

    Groceries

    Grocery comparison isn't available yet. We'll add it once retailers let us use their price data. Supermarket prices depend on the store, loyalty cards, multi-buys and delivery fees, so we'll show those conditions separately.
